Non-Government Organisations

Overview

Australia is supporting community-driven development projects which benefit the 84 per cent of Solomon Islands that live in rural and remote areas.

Through a five year program which supports non government organisations in Solomon Islanders together with their Australian counterparts, AusAID is working to improve health and livelihood opportunities, particularly women and young people. The program commenced in 2009.

AusAID is providing funding of $20 million for the five year program. Two and a half years into the program, it is working in around 120 communities across six provinces in a range of areas that include elimination of violence against women and children, water and sanitation, micro-credit and sustainable small business.

One of the identified program outcomes is to seek real changes in the lives of women, children and men in Solomon Islands.

The program will develop a guide of lessons learned that will explore different cost-effective ways of working with communities to improve livelihoods and deliver services.
