Regional & Global initiatives

While the strong bilateral Partnership is the foundation for Australia’s aid to Vanuatu, some development challenges are better met through regional and global approaches.

Pacific countries address shared development challenges cooperatively through various regional forums and organisations, particularly the Pacific Islands Forum. Working with member countries and donors, organisations such as the Secretariat of the Pacific Community and the University of the South Pacific support education, research and development in areas that matter most to the region. These efforts are guided by the Pacific Plan, and complemented by the Cairns Compact on Strengthening Development Coordination in the Pacific, which highlight aid priorities and principles for improving aid management in the region.

Australia supports several major regional initiatives in the Pacific to build skills, leadership and service delivery across the region, including in Vanuatu.

Vanuatu also benefits from Australia’s global partnerships, including with multilateral donors, with Australian non-government organisations, and through programs that enable volunteers, youth, businesses, academics and higher education organisations to support Vanuatu’s development.
