Welcome to the first issue of the fortnightly AusAID newsletter – Insight.

Insight will deliver news about the Australian aid program to your direct to your inbox. It will let you know what we are doing to reduce poverty, save lives and provide greater opportunity in developing countries.

The AusAID Engage Blog

The AusAID blog is a platform to communicate and discuss Australia’s aid program. The AusAID blog will feature updates, stories and analysis from Australian Government staff who will be blogging from around the world. In addition, the AusAID blog will seek the views of domestic and international development experts to provide their views and analysis of important emerging trends and world events as they impact the aid program.

All Children Reading

Australia will contribute to the reading outcomes for 100 million children in primary grades by 2015 under a new All Children Reading initiative announced during the visit of President Barack Obama as part of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Grand Challenge for Development program.

Australia and the United States partnering in development

Prime Minister Julia Gillard and President Barack Obama met on 16 November in Canberra and announced a series of initiatives to expand and deepen cooperation between Australia and the United States, including development cooperation.

Focus on Indonesia

In the latest edition of the Focus Online magazine, we examine Australia's aid program in Indonesia. Australia is helping Indonesia to reduce poverty–a priority for the Indonesian Government–by providing funds and expertise to build schools and roads, improve health systems and install clean water and sanitation facilities.

Australian support for eradicating polio

Australia has pledged $50 million to the Global Polio Eradication Initiative to support worldwide efforts to tackle the last remaining cases of polio. Polio is a debilitating and potentially fatal disease that can be easily prevented through vaccination.

Food security in Africa

On 28 October 2011, Prime Minister Julia Gillard announced a new initiative to share Australia’s expertise in food production with the people of Africa. The Australian International Centre for Food Security will help African countries strengthen their agricultural practices and provide access to a large network of Australian, African and international research bodies.

Mining for Development

Australia’s new Mining for Development Initiative is helping developing countries use their natural resources to grow their economies and provide social benefits to their people. The aid program is expanding its mining-related assistance to improve resource governance, sustainability and development.

Health services in PNG

Australia is contributing $64 million towards a project to improve health services in Papua New Guinea. About one thousand villagers from Abau District welcomed Minister Rudd when he visited PNG in October and made the announcement.
